Another slightly different year... Of course we counted on the fact that 2021 will be a "first" - after all, travelling with a half-empty 30-litre backpack and X bags full of diapers, snacks and spare clothes is quite a difference. What the heck, even that packing and the long hikes we did were picked up pretty quickly. But what no one probably fully counted on was that the coronavirus would be in office for much of this year...

Val d´Orcia: the true Tuscany

When I say Tuscany, I think of green rolling countryside, endless vineyards, here and there a farmhouse and zigzag paths lined with tall trees, in short, the idyll from Googled photos. Finding vineyards in Italy is no mean feat, but only one area - Val d'Orcia - does the rest. I was completely enthusiastic about visiting this valley, and I rewrote the itinerary you may have read about in the previous article until I managed to fit in at least a day and night spent there.

I love Italy in general and I love coming back here. I'm fascinated by the fact that every corner of it is completely different, yet the basics remain - nature, history, sights, shopping and great food, gelato and wine. Of course, in Tuscany you'll find a little bit of everything and maybe even more of something too, it's such an Italian gem, I guess. Urban tourism lovers in particular will find something to love here, as every other city or town has something distinctive and interesting, plus most of them are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, of which there is a really huge concentration in Tuscany. You won't go wrong even if you want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Would you rather lounge by the sea or move further south to enjoy wine from the local vineyards under the shade of cypress trees?

Saxer Lücke + a bit of Liechtenstein

One of the last stops on our week-long Swiss trip was the Saxer Lücke mountain pass, and in retrospect I am very glad I included it in my itinerary. This pass is located at 1649m above sea level and lies on the border between the cantons of Sankt Gallen and Appenzell Innerrhoden in the Alpstein mountain range. Directly above it are the curving peaks of the Chrüzberg (2065 m), for which photographers come from all over Europe.

After visiting the gorge on the Aare River, see the previous article entitled Our 2 days in the Interlaken area, we did not return to Interlaken. Our home for the night was the Terrasse Nessental guesthouse a few kilometres away, which, thanks to the excellent owner and the excellent rösti, I can recommend with a clear conscience. We paid about €100 for a room with private bathroom, breakfast and free parking. Oh, and for those who don't know what rösti is - it's probably most similar to hashbrown (potato pancakes). The base is a pancake of grated potatoes and then on top comes whatever you're in the mood for. It can be cheese, bacon, vegetables, mushrooms or maybe ox eye etc., and together it's one big YUM!

We decided to spend our holiday in Croatia in two different cities to broaden our horizons and to discover more interesting places. The first choice was Senj, which you could read about in the previous article Croatia in May: Senj and surroundings. The second city, after evaluating all the pros and cons, was Zadar. And that's the one we'll look at today, plus of course some tips for trips within a reasonable driving distance.

Croatia in May: Senj and surroundings

By the beginning of May, we were fed up with all the measures that have no head or heel, and other cries of our government full of... (fill in the blank). In short, we have somehow run out of patience in the Czech Republic. And so we packed up our cuttings, sandals and socks, and went to Croatia like good Czechs :) Where I never really wanted to go!
